My Interview with Director Jonathan Mostow about Surragates staring Bruce Willis

Jay David Murphy interviews Jonathan Mostow, the director of the new film Surrogates and discovers that getting unplugged from technology plugs us back into our humanity.
The new movie Surrogates opens on September 25 staring Bruce Willis as agent Greer and co-starring Ving Rhames as the Prophet. Digital Journal had the pleasure of interviewing its director while he puts the finishing touches on the film a month before its release.

Jonathan Mostow, director of the new film Surrogates, is no stranger to dramatic thrillers and takes on the task of bringing the film adaptation of the graphic novel by author Robert Vendittie (illustrated by Brett Weldele) to cinema graphic life. The screenplay was co-written and adapted from the novel by Michael Ferris and John Brancato.

The premise of the film Surrogates is that in an alternate reality that mirrors modern society, humans use robotic surrogates to live their life, doing all things they wish they can do from the safety of their home while experiencing what their surrogates are going through by being plugged into technology that allows a vicarious realistic experience.

In Surrogates, humans choose to experience life through idealized version robots of themselves, sending them out to live their life, that’s until something goes very wrong and a murder takes place while plugged in.

With this established, Bruce Willis plays an FBI agent who enlists the aid of his own surrogate to investigate the murder of the genius college student who invented the Surrogates.

After a near fatal encounter during the investigation, Bruce Willis’ character’s surrogate is destroyed and forces him out of isolation to unravel a conspiracy behind the murders.

Jonathan Mostow director of the Surrogates debuts September 25th.
Jonathan Mostow has directed the successful third story in the Terminator series, Rise of the Machines staring now Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. He also directed the critically acclaimed U571 which has become a must see film and is now considered a classic film that students of cinema and film fans should make a part of the curriculum and collection.

I had an opportunity to speak with Jonathan Mostow about his new film Surrogates which will debut on September 25.

Mostow comes to Surrogates with an incredible education pedigree graduating from Harvard, training with the American Repertory Company, and attending the Lee Strasberg Institute giving him a strong back ground in acting.

Directing U571 was Mostow’s breakthrough film that showed his talent working with actors. I asked how he came to create the story. “I got really interested in the subject, did the research, and wrote the screenplay,” Mostow replied. His directing on the Terminator: Rise of the Machine gave him science fiction and the robot experience to bring this novel adaptation to the big screen.

I asked Mostow what had attracted him to the project and what he brought to the film. “Well it had been 12 years since the last film, I didn’t resurrect the franchise, I just continued with one of the great science fiction classics,” said Mostow.

I asked him about the resurgence of the franchise after T3. Mostow continued with, “Of course there was the fourth film and the series; I think it allowed the interest in the story to continue.”

He was very genuine when he spoke with us about T3 that he did not save or rebuild it, he was very humble in saying he added another chapter to an already great story and was glad to be part it.

I asked what attracted Mostow to the Surrogate project. “The core of it is what is happening to us now in society, we are so tied in with our technology, more connected than ever, yet we have isolated ourselves from direct contact,” he replied.

The theme we discussed was that we have become so plugged in to the Internet and television that we have lost contact with those around us. So in order to reconnect with our humanity we need to unplug ourselves from the technology we have become reliant on to get plugged back into who we really are.

It was an interesting perspective, we are so plugged in, as he explained, that we have lost a sense of our human experience, so in order to reconnect we need to unplug.

On the topic of the cinematography and the special effects, Mostow had this to say, “We are now in the final tweaking, crossing our T’s and dotting the I’s getting it ready for its release.”

I asked him aside from the obvious question of making money at the box office what do you hope comes from this film? “That’s a great question; I have never been asked that. I hope it leads to conversation. The film doesn’t have the answers but it does ask all the questions.”

Our time ended all too quickly on the phone interview Wednesday evening. The odd thing is that we were both en route, myself riding the bus and madly writing down what he had to say and he was driving to a meeting. We were conversing on our cell phones. We were talking about being unplugged to reconnect. That’s when we were disconnected!

He quickly called back, but it took a second try to reconnect. The irony was palatable. For a moment our technology failed us, but through Jonathan’s determination we were able to reconnect for a final question.

I asked what was important to Mastow: “Family, friends, and saying something in some small way that has a positive effect on our lives, on society.”

The impression that was left by Jonathan Mostow on this journalist was that he is a very humble and thoughtful person with a quiet passion for the projects he gets involved in. It is rare that a person of his stature will take the time to speak openly about themselves and their projects.

His films continue to be a breath of fresh air, whether it’s an original film, a continuation film, or an adaptation, as with his latest film, Surrogates, coming to a theater near you. Get out and go see this one on the big screen and get the conversation started.

I have been accepted by Digital Journal as their Las Vegas Reporter

I am very excited to announce that I am now reporting for Digital Journal.com.  They have been around since 2006 and have an outstanding journalism reputation with high editorial standards and an insistence on 'on the ground' news coverage.

Unlike the Examiner, which is the new kid on the block, Digital Journal has an editorial process where stories are actually screened and reviewed by staff before they are released to check validity, integrity, and news worthiness.

Unfortunately, the Examiner proved to be nothing more than a free for all sub par blog, where the top examiners barely write a couple of sentences(usually plagiarized) then a ton of links, never even go to an event or news situation, and usually, in the case of Las Vegas, copied-rewrote-or flat out plagiarized from the Review Journal-The Sun-The Weekly and others.

It only took me two weeks to become Las Vegas' top Examiner with quality celebrity events stories with one of a kind photo's from the events that I attended. My focus has always been my writing, but I love photography and had some wonderful shoots with the likes of Holly Madison, celebrities at the Palms, and even some fun shots at TAO during a Las Vegas Weekly party.

Now I have much more latitude and not stuck doing just celebrity events, which was not bad which I enjoyed it very much.

As a real journalist now with a real news organization, with actual Press credentials (Examiner did not and could not issue them) that can be checked and verified, I am excited to the wide open pallet of news opportunities to cover, from hard news stories that go in depth into the days issues in Las Vegas, which are many, to sports, to celebrity events, on the spot live coverage of news events, and more.

I guess you could call my Examiner experience a nice warm up, and an awakening to who is producing real journalism and who is a glorified blog.  Until they actually decide to run their stories through an editorial staff the Examiner is doomed to be blog.

Now I am not running down blogs, they have their place, but they are not NEWS, or what you would expect real journalism to be.  I have several blogs myself and place things there, that belong there.  I will be droping many of my news articles into my blogs to extend my exposure.  Plus, blogs do give you a lot of freedom to express your opinion and do some interesting things that are just not news worthy.

Let me state here, that in the coming months I will be focusing heavily on producing the highest quality news coming out of Vegas that will lead the pack, brake open stores, and dig into what really shapes our lives here in Las Vegas.

I will also guarantee that I will not follow the crowd and go with what's on the front pages of the paper news, not that there is anything wrong with them, I just feel that repeating what everyone else is doing is not good journalism.

I will find, evolve, and put out original stories with attention paid to high quality writing, facts, and telling a well rounded stores that don't judge but show as many sides as possible, allowing the reader to be more involved in making their own choices and not be lead to one opinion or judgment.

One of the most important things for me as a journalist is that I never jump on the hater, basher, or negative bandwagon.  If anything my stories will be positive and look for the good in things and not the bad.  There are times when doing hard news, that the facts cannot be avoided.  I will not discard them, but I will use them as motivational tool in my writing.

Again, I am very excited to be part the of the Digital Journal.com Team and their high quality and top notch standards for news reporting.

Make sure you make it a daily thing and watch for up coming announcements and exciting news.

The memorial candle light vigil at Harry O's for Michael Jackson

Minutes before 7pm a trio of young ladies sung “I’ll be There” which brought tears to those listening.  Tierra ripped out the lead which sounded, hauntingly like Mikel Jackson as she pounded the lyrics with heart.

Shakirah, Tierra, and Jamika did a great job, and Tierra wowed people as reporters from channel 13, channel 3, and others flooded Harry O’s at 7pm.

DJ Parnell of 97.5 provided DJ music for free because of his love of Mikel Jackson.  Everyone wore a white glove on the right hand in remembrance of Michael Jackson celebrateing his life, his music, and his profound influence on generations of people across the globe. News crew cameras grabbed footage as people poured into Harry O’s as he provided a space for those to celebrate the King of Pop.  Joe Jackson just days ago had visited Harry O’ at the restaurant in great spirits and in a playful mood. Harry O’ offered up his establishment for all those who wanted to remember and celebrate Michael Jackson’s memory.  When 7pm hit, so did the people, it was electric.

Having been writing about Harry O’ for about 2 months this was definitely something unexpected and unprecedented in my career as a reporter and writer.  I have never seen so much happen, so fast, around a man who makes BBQ for a living.

As I write this I am stunned, amazed, and thinking of a little boy who sang, “ABC and I’ll Be There”.  Michael, from an old fan, I will miss your music.

Within moments the crowd became to large to be  in the restaurant  and the event moved outside. Dj Parnell quickly set up his equipmentl on the south side of the building and those in attendence moved the chairs outside.

The young man known as AM, who came to impersonate in rememberance opened up with “Rock You” and got the crowd going.  Then the young ladies called “Desert Roses” did “I’ll be There” again, followed by morel music from DJ Parnell. The event wrapped up with a jam, lighting of candles, and then Harry O’ had eveyone put the candles out and had each person take one in remembereance. Not  wanting it to be over the music continued to play on and 20 minuetes of dancing and signing continued all in remembereance of Michael Jackson. Everyone who was there told stories of how Michael Jackson’s music had effected them and their life and  a lot of tears were shed.  The diverse crowd all came to celebrate the King of Pops life and say goodbye to the international icon. The evening was carried out with the greatest respect for the loss of Michael Jackson and the mourning family. From the small BBQ shop of Harry O’s, under the June cresent moon, people in Las Vegas said good bye to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, who’s life and music were cut short at the age of 50.

Michael Jacksons Las Vegas Tribute at Harry O's

Last Friday as I sat in Harry O’s BBQ restaurant in Las Vegas Joe Jackson popped is head in the door with a child like grin looking for Harry O’.  At the moment Harry O’ was in the kitchen.

Joe shushed me and told me to get him up front as he hid around the pillar that separated the front from the kitchen. I called Harry on the phone to come up front right away, that there was someone to see him.

I took a couple of minuets for Harry O’ to make his way up front.  Meanwhile, Joe Jackson held his position, giggling and smiling waiting for Harry O’ to come around the corner, so he could jump out and startle him. When Harry O’ came out from the back Joe watched my eye’s to give him the cue to jump out on time and surprise Harry O’.

It went off without a hitch and both hugged and laughed like the oldest of friends. Joe Jackson has been a huge supporter of Harry O’ and his restaurant and its move to its new location.  They both joked and kidded around like a couple of school kids exchanging barbs and friendly insults.   P

eople came through the door Joe was genuinely interested always asking where they from and who they where. Joe exchanged barbs with Kelly one of Harry O’s valued employees.  He had been to her birthday party just a year ago. Joe had Harry O’ make him up some catfish and the two went into the dining room to talk privately.

There was not a single hint of any troubles in the Jackson camp just a few days ago. My impression of Joe was that of being very amiable and very interested in everyone around, always asking a few questions of each person who wondered into Harry O’s while he was there. Two days later, after leaving Harry O’s place, I got a call from Harry O’, “Jay dog, someone stole Mikel Jackson’s picture off my wall!”  That was four days before Mikel Jackson was pronounced dead.  It was a foreshadowing of what was about to shock the world. It was a hot muggy afternoon on the 25th when I slipped out of Harry O’s to go take a shower.  After getting out of the shower and sitting for a moment chatting with a friend, the news broke, Michael Jackson was dead.

I quickly called Harry O’ who had got the news just before I had seen it brake on CNN.  His phone was going off the hook and he was answering questions from news stations from around Las Vegas. By the time I got back to the restaurant, Channel 13 was there to do three hours of live drop in's during their news cast.

The situation was surreal when a man wearing a TV box walked by, naked underneath. On the spot Harry O’ and his staff decided to hold a candle light vigil at 7pm on the 26th, everyone was encouraged to bring one white glove. Michael Jackson’s Music has blared out of the Juke Box for two days.  The events for the 26th included performers doing some of Michaels hits, 97.5 will be there broadcasting live.  Several of the TV stations will be there recording for future broadcasts.

I have been and will be there for everything, recording the inside story and the events from this BBQ restaurant known as Harry O’s as it becomes the Las Vegas Epicenter for the mourning of Michael Jackson the King of Pop. As this story evolve’s I will post some more on this incredible story.

Garbage People 'The Clown'

Garbage People ‘The Clown’ I met a clown in a dumpster. I met a clown in a dumpster and got to know him. He gave me his things and sent me on journey to find him. During that journey I found myself and said hello. You will meet a clown and never see him someday. You will know the clown, but never know him. I found a clown in the garbage one day. And the clown found me. Why was the clown in the Garbage? Why was the man that was the clown there too? I ask the clown, “in the end, is it the garbage for me too?” The clown gave me his life’s things and told me to go discover what life means. In the end I got to know the clown in the drawer and understood his message. I thank the clown for leaving me his life’s memories, for me to find in the Garbage. The clown in his wisdom left me a message to find and to tell the story he could not tell. He left me his things to translate to you. The clown showed me that belief in our self is a lesson worth learning. The Clown reminded me of the journey and its significance and importance over the destination. I remembered the good and the bad, the joy and the horror. Those memories were not about the things in my life, they were about the people in my life. You can throw it all away and in the end you will still have the memories of the people or the person. I found a clown in the garbage one day and he found me. Come and let a clown tell his story from a garbage dumpster and beyond. Garbage People ‘The Clown’ is now available exclusively from www.zbzebooks.com. Written by Jay David Murphy as a companion piece of literature to ‘My Craigslist Free Miracle’. This story could be classified as fiction but is based on real life accounts of the author and acquaintances and told in a story format.

Craigslist Free Miracle is the good news!

The news about Craigslist the last three months as not been kind and everybody has jumped on the slam Craiglsit band wagon.  Meanwhile everyday millions of people, buy-sell-trade, find-meet-and make friends.

Why don't we ever here about the good.  It's like all our grandmothers used to say, "Do something bad and a 100 people will know about it.  Do one thing good and know one will ever find out about it."

I heard today about a man in a similar circumstance that I was in did a simular thing that I did and that was write a book relating to Craigslist.  He had written some 1,000 page manuel on it.

Bravo, he took what there made something people could use.
POST.png
The difference in "My Craigslist Free Miracle" is that it's more a story and journel than a manuel.
It has some examples and some coping of ads.  But what I tried to do was to make something that anyone, in any walk of life could relate too.

"My Craigslist Free Miracle" is my story of the last 12 months and how I lost my executiive position, started searching for work and then discovered what all Craigslist really did.

Craigslist turned into my teacher and educational web site.  I learned all about the interent.  It helped me change back to my writing career and providing job listings for it.  I have bought, sold and traded for tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise and services.

I found my Web builder on Craigslist.  I had someone give me a 16' foot box truck because of Craigslist.  I traded my Dell Optiplex tower computer for two laptops June the 7th.  Today I met a large buinsess owner who wants me to help him get exposure on Craigslist.

I have paid my food, rent, and utilities for 12 months making money off of Craiglist.

I have made new friends, helped old ones, and introduced them all to the benefits of Craigslist.  I use it to teach beginners about the net and so much more.

Most importantly I wrote "My Craiglist Free Miracle" a friendly heart warming story of an American man who was not going to lie down and take and fought and regained is self through what I call,  "My Craigslist Free Miracle" from my website, born from Craigslist, www.zbzebooks.com.

If you get "My Craigslist Free Miracle" by June 14th on June 15th you get a Free copy of "Garbage People" on its day one release.

"Garbage People" is a power piece of literature written to get people to think about what they really value in life.  It will tear your heart out, make you laugh, cry, and bring joy to you all at once.

There's a lot of unkown facts about many celebrites that are bound to make a stir in the entetainment media over the coming months.  They are not flattering, but they are important in telling this story.

It's not about me, its about us, and some very important people I have known and know now.
It's also dedicated to several special women in my life, from the past and present.

I will introduce you to a hero and herian and will see the power of human will at its worst and its finest moments.

"Garbage People" is a companion piece to "My Craiglist Free Miracle" but it is different in that it is a ture piece of literature and not a journal story like the first.

There will be a third book to the trilogy coming August 15th, "My Adventures with the Universal Secret and Beyond."

For July 15th it is a work of love for the children and the children in all of us, "Mucklefairy Tales."

Garbage People Release June 15th! Admin @ (04 Jun : 22:26) (New News)
